Pendant la troisième année de son séjour à Paris, Jefferson avait fait un tour de France, carnet en main, pour voir de près et noter comment vivaient les gens de France. Sa curiosité n'était pas d'ordre politique, mais d'ordre scientifique, industriel et agricole. A Nîmes, il tomba amoureux d'une maison, la Maison Carrée. Il l'admirait tellement qu'il restait des heures à la contempler, à en faire des dessins. Plus tard, il se servit de ces dessins pour dresser les plans du State Capitol de Richmond, qui est un des plus beaux édifices des États-Unis. Jusqu'à sa mort, à l'âge de 83 ans, Jefferson continua à s'intéresser à la France et à suivre son évolution politique. Consterné par les actes de violence de la Terreur, il resta cependant fidèle à sa foi en la Révolution et sa force libératrice. À ses yeux, la Révolution Française était l'un des événements les plus importants de l'histoire du monde.
